New Capabilities Beat Headcount Reduction

It’s 6am on a Sunday, you run a hot AI company that largely delivers on what you say, and you are thinking of a marketing campaign to drive some excitement, have serious people demo the product.

Would you rather talk about new capabilities unlocked leading to stuff you never imagined before or do you want talk about doing the old things but with significantly less headcount.

Doing the latter will yield some results no doubt – after all, this is what you have learned from some of the LinkedIn Marketing Gurus.

I am no holier than thou here so this is also a reminder to self to not talk about headcount reduction as the AI magic pill.

ONLY parroting cost-cutting / headcount reduction is also probably a sure shot way of disappearing into the ether and making sure you never position yourself well as an elite product in the mind of players who are looking for new capabilities.

Cost cutting is cool. But you know, what’s cooler? New Capabilities.

PS: Yes, there are nuances to all of this. So, if you still want to defend your one liner about headcount reduction, may the markets shower billions upon you.
